Restringing advice
How often should I restring my racket?
A useful starting point is to restring each year roughly as many times as you play per week. However, broken strings, loss of performance, discomfort, your level and style of play can all change that recommendation.
Which string should I choose?
Natural gut, synthetic gut, polyester and multifilament strings all behave differently. Polyester is popular for spin and durability, while synthetic gut and multifilament options can be more comfortable for players with arm or elbow concerns. Chris can recommend a setup after discussing your game.
What tension should I choose?
Lower tensions generally provide more power and comfort, while higher tensions provide a firmer, more controlled response. Tennis rackets are commonly strung in the 45–60 lb range, squash around 20–30 lb and badminton around 20–30 lb, but the right choice depends on the racket and player.
Does string gauge matter?
Thinner strings can offer more feel, power and spin. Thicker strings generally provide greater durability.
What is a hybrid setup?
A hybrid uses two different strings in the mains and crosses. It can combine the spin and control of polyester with the comfort of a softer string.
How long will my strings last?
That depends on playing frequency, spin, string type, racket condition and mishits. Worn grommets can also cause premature breakage near the edge of the frame.
How quickly can my racket be ready?
Turnaround depends on workload and when you next need to play. Ask if you need a same-day or while-you-wait service and Chris will help where possible.
Where can I drop off my racket?
Drop-off can be arranged at the Ilkley shop or through the Roundhay, Leeds service. Collection and delivery may be possible depending on location and availability.
Do you offer mail-order stringing?
Yes. Contact Chris before posting your racket to arrange the service and return delivery.
